Engineering design companies such as ourselves usually quote and charge for development work on an hourly rate. However Shippun Solutions has carried out more innovative work on the basis of licensing. In other words, we do all the design work for free. You then pay us for the exclusive right to use that design. Payment can either be a one-off payment for indefinite use or else a percentage payment on every unit sold. Examples of one of each are described below.

Telecoms signal Detector
The Customer required a small device to be fitted to a connector carrying a telecom signal to indicate using an LED when the signal was present. The signal level at full strength was only 0.5V pk, and at a frequency over 100MHz, In addition, the detector was required to work even when system cable attenuation reduced the power by a factor of 4. LEDs require at least 1.8V forward bias. The high frequency of the signal means that a step-up transformer was not an option.

The customer had been to four other design houses with this problem before coming to Shippun Solutions. All the other designers had thought that there was no solution to the problem. Confidentiality agreements prevent a description of the solution being made public: nevertheless a solution was found that fully met the customers requirements and enabled the product to be built and accepted. This product is sold under a royalty agreement.

Rootes Blower

The customer repaired and refurbished vintage automobiles fitted with supercharged engines. A common requirement was to rebuild the supercharger. When these components failed, they often failed disastrously. It was often not possible to reconstruct the design from the wreckage of the failed components. Original design drawings were in existence. An algorithm was required to design the blower rotors using only the information available from the housing: i.e. the diameter of the rotors and the spacing between axes. This is no easy task. The Rootes blower rotor needs to be in constant close proximity with its twin while rotating. In addition, allowance need to be made for expansion. A mathematical solution to the problem was not forthcoming.

Shippun Solutions was able to specify a simple algorithm for the design of these rotors based on the given mechanical parameters and the required volume to be shifted per revolution. The customer was able to design and build his own rotors to fit the existing housing. This was an example of a solution where a fixed fee was paid for the solution rather than a royalty deal.
